The Rating Hiding in Plain Sight
Ask someone planning a rooftop tent build what their roof can carry and they'll quote — or go hunting for — their vehicle's factory roof load figure. Good instinct. Wrong first question.
In most real-world builds, the number that actually governs what you can carry isn't the vehicle's rating at all. It's the rack's. Crossbars, towers, fit kits, and platforms each carry their own dynamic rating, and on a huge share of vehicles — especially anything with flush rails or a bare roof — the rack system's rating comes in below what the vehicle's body could theoretically support. You can own a vehicle with a generous roof allowance and still be limited to far less because of the bars you bolted to it.
This post is about rack math: the min() rule that determines your true ceiling, why the rack's own weight counts, what crossbar spread has to do with anything, and how to run the numbers on a real build.
The min() Rule
Your roof system is a chain with three links, and a chain has exactly one strength: its weakest link's. Your real load limit is the lowest of:
- Your vehicle's roof load rating — from your owner's manual. We don't publish per-vehicle figures because they vary by year, trim, and roof configuration; the manual-check takes ten minutes and gives you the number that's true for your car.
- Your rack system's dynamic rating — from the rack maker's spec sheet, and specifically for your bar + tower + fit kit combination on your vehicle. This is the spec people get wrong most often, because the same crossbar carries different ratings on different mounting systems. A bar that's rated one way on raised rails can rate lower on a flush-rail or door-clamp fit.
- Your tent maker's mounting requirements — minimum bar spread, sometimes minimum bar rating, sometimes specific bar shapes.
Take the minimum of those three. That's your number. Not the biggest one, not the average, not the one printed in the largest font on the marketing page.
The corollary that surprises people: upgrading your rack only helps if the rack was your weakest link. Throwing a burly platform at a vehicle whose own roof rating is modest doesn't raise your ceiling one pound — the min() just moves to the vehicle.
The Rack Itself Weighs Something
Here's the line item almost everyone forgets: the rack's own weight typically counts against your vehicle's roof rating. Most vehicle manufacturers rate the total mass sitting on the roof — rack included — while rack makers generally rate what you can put on the rack. Two different accounting systems on the same roof. When in doubt, read both spec sheets and take the conservative interpretation.

That's a 34 lb spread — a quarter of a tent's worth of weight — before you've mounted anything. On a vehicle with a tight roof budget, choosing a Vortex RLT600 crossbar setup over a full platform can be the difference between a three-person softshell and nothing. Crossbar Spread: The Spec Nobody Checks
Load rating tells you how much weight the system can take. Crossbar spread — the front-to-back distance between your bars — determines how well a long load like a rooftop tent actually delivers its weight into those bars.
Rooftop tents are big, semi-rigid boxes. Their base extrusions are designed to be supported across a minimum span, and tent makers publish that minimum spread for a reason. Mount a tent on bars set too close together and you create two problems at once: the tent base bridges unsupported past the bars (stressing the tent floor), and the whole load gains leverage over each bar (stressing the towers in ways the load rating never modeled). A rating tested with weight distributed properly doesn't transfer to a load teetering on a narrow stance.
Before you buy anything, check three measurements: the tent maker's minimum bar spread, the actual spread your roof or rails can achieve, and where that spread puts the bars relative to your roof's reinforced mounting points. Some short-roofed vehicles physically cannot spread bars far enough for certain tents. No rating fixes geometry.
Platform vs Crossbars
For rooftop tent duty, both architectures work when rated appropriately, and the trade is simple. Crossbars are lighter, cheaper, and quicker to install; the Vortex RLT600 approach leaves the maximum share of your roof budget for the tent itself. Platforms like the Slimline II weigh and cost more, but they distribute load across many mounting points, give the tent a continuous supported base, and leave room to bolt on recovery boards, awnings, and lighting without re-engineering anything. If your build will grow, the platform usually earns its weight — if your vehicle-side math can absorb it.
A Worked Example
Say your crossbar system is rated 165 lb dynamic on your vehicle (hypothetical — pull your own spec), your owner's manual gives a roof figure comfortably above that, and you're eyeing the Thule Tepui Kukenam 3 at 131 lb.
The min() rule: vehicle rating (higher) vs rack rating (165) vs tent requirements (bar spread met, no minimum bar rating issue). Your ceiling is 165 lb.
Dynamic check: 131 lb tent vs 165 lb. Pass with 34 lb of margin — real margin, enough to not sweat mounting hardware and a wet canvas.
Static check: Using the commonly cited 3× rule-of-thumb (verify with your rack maker), roughly 495 lb static. Kukenam 3 plus two adults at 175 lb each: 131 + 350 = 481 lb. Pass — close enough that a confirmation email to the rack maker is smart, with enough room that a confirmed figure anywhere near the estimate clears it.
Now rerun it with flush-rail bars rated 120 lb dynamic — same vehicle, different fit kit. The dynamic check fails before the tent leaves the showroom: 131 vs 120. Same car, same tent, opposite verdict. The rack was the whole question.
Towers and Fixed Points
One more layer down: the rating belongs to the system, not the bar. Towers (the feet connecting bars to your vehicle) are rated as part of the fit-kit combination, and different attachment styles — raised rails, flush rails, fixed mounting points, door-frame clamps — carry meaningfully different ratings with the very same bar on top. Fixed-point and rail mounts connect to reinforced structure; clamp-style mounts grip the door frame and typically rate lowest. Check the rating for your exact configuration, re-torque the towers after your first trip with the tent (mounting hardware settles), and recheck periodically. A rack rated for the load only holds the load if it's still properly attached.

The lower number, always — that's the min() rule. Rack ratings and vehicle ratings are independent links in the same chain, and the weakest one governs. A rack can't make your roof stronger; it can only avoid being the new weakest link.
Does the rack's weight count against the rack's own rating?
Generally no — rack makers rate the load you place on the rack. But the rack's weight usually does count against your vehicle's roof rating, since most vehicle makers rate everything sitting on the roof. Read both spec sheets; when ambiguous, count it. The conservative read is free.
Can I mount a rooftop tent on just two crossbars?

Are platform racks overkill for one rooftop tent?
